A new look at traffic lights by designer Thanva Tivawong called The Sand Glass is using the sand-hour-glass as its model. LED lights trickle down to make an obvious statement, regarding the time left for the lights to change. Easy and intuitive.

At first glance, this looks quite nice.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t keep in mind the fact that there are people who are colour blind (in many cases red can’t be distinguished from green).
With regular traffic light colour blind people know the ‘colour’ by the position of the lights (top or bottom).

This design is not colorblind-friendly…
Many colorblind people have trouble telling green and red apart.
In the original design this is solved using the location of the lights – red on top, green on the bottom.

The point made here about the color blind should be addressed. Perhaps add these “Go!, Stop, Wait” labels as described in the “How it works” section ? Hmmm…
